Na haar indrukwekkende K2 Touching the Sky – op het DMFF in 2016 – kiest de Poolse regisseuse Eliza Kubarska ditmaal het tegenovergestelde perspectief. Ze gaat niet, zoals filmmakers zo vaak doen, met een westerse expeditie mee naar de Himalaya, maar benadert de klimbusiness door de ogen van de sherpa’s.
Dat levert niet alleen een prachtige inkijk in hun cultuur, rituelen en gezinsleven, maar werpt ook de vraag op: mag je een heilige berg beklimmen als dat geld oplevert voor de opleiding van je kind? Dat leidt zelfs tot spanningen binnen de sherpafamilie, die cameraman Piotr Roso?owski meesterlijk vastlegt.
Voormalig klimster Kubarska draaide voor deze film in het afgelegen oosten van Nepal, waar je niet zomaar kunt binnenvallen voor een kop koffie. Het kostte haar vier jaar om er te komen, het vertrouwen van de lokale gemeenschap te winnen en vervolgens het verhaal te verfilmen. Wall of Shadows zoekt de grenzen van documentaire en fictie op, het resultaat is al op diverse internationale festivals in de prijzen gevallen.

‘I told you, this film is not about climbing’, says one of the climbers in this movie, ‘it is about people’, and he is right, and not right at the same time. This film is about the people that live the mountains, not only climb them. It is a powerful, stunning portrait of a Sherpa family, working in the climbing business, trying to raise money so their children can escape the harsh life in the Himalayas. But it is far more than that. The filming is magnificent, set in bleak and icy gray-blue colors, the camera sticking to the characters and the story, the scenario outstanding and the dialogue fierce. This film is made by mountain people. We are witnessing the life questions of a family as if we are there with them, from a Sherpa point of view, helping us to understand their fate. Also, ‘Wall of shadows’ is distinguished by beautiful music that reflects the coolness and splendor of the icy landscape.
‘I don’t want my son to climb’, ‘What choice do we have’, ‘there is a God, but we got to make ends meet’, ‘if you don’t climb I cannot pay you’- simple sentences that paint a difficult world, in which the Sherpa still files the crampons of the climber. The stars in this documentary/feature film are world-class: Ngada Sherpa, Jomdoe Sherpa, Dawa Tenzing Sherpa (nine times Everest!) are completely at home in front of the camera. Filmmaker Eliza Kubarska managed to introduce the viewer to the explorers’ problems related to competition and humility towards nature, as they try to climb Kumbhakarna, the holiest of mountains that is not supposed to be climbed at all.
